New York City
Law Department Licenses Inslaw's New Client/Server Case Management
Software
The
New York City Law Department, one of the largest law departments
in the United States, has licensed the new client/server generation
of INSLAW's MODULAW(TM) case management software product. New York
will operate its copy of the new system on Microsoft Windows client
computers in conjunction with IBM's DB2 relational database management
system on the server.
The
New York City Law Department, with as many as 1000 end users, including
630 lawyers in 20 divisions, has been operating an earlier generation
of INSLAW's MODULAW software product for the past decade. The increasing
attraction and availability of powerful desktop PCs prompted its
decision to license the new client/server generation of MODULAW.
Mr.
Edward Lieberman, Managing Attorney for the Law Department, issued
the following statement: With its large and varied caseload, the
New York City Law Department requires case management technology
that is rich in functionality, sufficiently versatile to accommodate
the differences among our divisions in case types and workflow patterns,
and reliable in operation. INSLAW's track record with this Department
on these issues and the capabilities of the new client/server generation
of their software account for our decision to license the new INSLAW
product.
The
new client/server generation of the INSLAW case management software
is available for operation on servers ranging in size from PCs through
mid-range computers and workstations, to mainframes, and in conjunction
with many of the leading relational database management systems.
INSLAW designed the new generation of its software for efficient
communications over the Internet in the future, by avoiding the
"fat client" syndrome, using local caching for functions such as
Help Files and translation tables, and implementing other strategies
that minimize the volume of network traffic. Finally, to reduce
future upkeep and maintenance costs for its customers, INSLAW adopted
a form of object-oriented computer programming.
According
to William A. Hamilton, INSLAW's President, "the software engineering
approach that INSLAW followed means that the same client/server
generation of our case management software that is used by very
large legal organizations, such as the New York City Law Department,
can be used as well by smaller agencies and companies in both the
public and private sectors of our market."
MODULAW
is an integrated software application that supports the management
of all types of legal matters and cases, from referral to final
disposition. The system is used to control outside counsel costs,
manage litigation, schedule calendar events, track parties, index
and retrieve work products and documents, create budgets and track
expenses, make assignments and record attorney time, and produce
management reports.
The
new client/server generation of INSLAW's case management software
is available for corporate and municipal law departments, the claims
litigation departments and special investigation units of major
insurance companies, courts, correctional facilities, prosecutors,
and other justice agencies. INSLAW's case management software is
currently licensed for over 400 sites in the U.S. and Europe.
