New York City Licenses INSLAW's Comprehensive Justice Information System For Juvenile Justice

The New York City Government has licensed INSLAW's Comprehensive Justice Information System (CJIS) to support the prosecution, detention, and supervision of juvenile offenders in all five boroughs. The City's Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications will manage the project for the City.

For the past decade, New York City has been operating separate copies of an earlier generation of INSLAW's case management software to support juvenile prosecution activities of the Corporation Counsel's Office and the juvenile probation activities of the Department of Probation, respectively. The upgrade of these two systems into a single integrated relational CJIS application will improve the sharing of data in the administration of juvenile justice. New York City's decision to extend the use of the INSLAW software to support the juvenile detention activities of the Department of Juvenile Justice will further tighten coordination among juvenile justice agencies.

Mr. Peter Reinharz, Chief of the Family Court Division of the New York City Corporation Counsel, issued the following statement:

New York City has had major success recently in reducing serious crime. Effective administration of the system of juvenile justice is a vital prerequisite to the continuation of this trend. In upgrading to the relational database version of INSLAW's integrated Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) software product, New York City expects to obtain improved leverage over bottlenecks and other problems that impede the effective administration of juvenile justice.

Over 600 end users in the three New York City agencies will access INSLAW's CJIS system, which will keep track of approximately 3,500 new juvenile cases per year. The CJIS system will operate on an IBM computer in conjunction with the DB/2 relational database management system.

CJIS is an integrated software application that supports the case and person tracking requirements of prosecutors, probation, corrections, courts and other justice agencies. INSLAW's case management software can be implemented as a stand-alone application for individual departments or as an integrated city or county-wide justice information system. INSLAW's software is currently licensed for over 400 sites in the United States and Europe.
